Classic film posters on sale for thousands
A collection of vintage film posters from years gone by has been put up for sale at Christie’s in London, including a number from controversial director Howard Hughes. The poster from his famous 1943 film The Outlaw, which showed in cinemas for just a week before being banned for its explicit content, is expected to fetch up to £25,000 when it goes to auction next month.
Vintage posters have been making headlines across the board this spring – a number of Victorian cycling adverts were recently reproduced after rare copies sold for over £20,000 at auction. So why are they so popular? We think it could be down to the new trend for re-using and recycling – while this grew out of a necessity last year as purse strings tightened, it seems art-lovers and interior designers are starting to see the appeal in bring vintage items back to life and into the present day.
Other lots in the Christie’s auction include the artwork of 1958’s The Attack of the 50ft Woman, and Stanley Kubrick’s hugely successful Dr. Strangelove from 1968. The auction will start on May 23.
