Graduates: How to find a job in the creative industries
Whether you’re a writer or a designer, finding a job in the world of creative media is a tough challenge, especially for those just out of college. It’s all too easy to get caught in the unemployment loop – you need a job to get some experience, but you need the experience to get the job you want. So how can you give yourself the edge over other graduates in the same position?
Your first job should be to set up an online portfolio. Only include detailed pieces you’re really proud of – not the poster for your friends’ band, or the article about cat charities for the local paper (unless they’re unusually creative pieces). Make sure your methods and rough work is included in this portfolio – potential employers don’t just want to know what you can do, they also want to see how you get there.
You’ll also want to find a way of reaching out to employers. Be assertive, and contact any agency in the area, regardless of whether they’re hiring or not. Always make a point of asking whether they can hold onto your portfolio for future reference, as this shows willing and interest in that company. You should also get some personalised business cards printed, as with the right design or copy these can give a fantastic lasting impression, and encourage future employers to remember you!
