Young artist bags prize for Durham towns holiday leaflet
County Durham is often seen as a picturesque place with unassuming villages centred around the glorious UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Durham Cathedral, which sits pretty on its riverside peninsula. However, there’s a lot more to the area, which a new flyer is trying to prove – and its cover has already been designed following a competition of schoolchildren in the north-east locale.
The leaflet highlights the delights of the Three Towns area – Crook, Willington and Tow Law – and has been produced by Jack Drum Arts and the Three Towns Area Action Partnership. Scooping the gong for best front cover – and being given a giant Easter egg for his efforts – was six-year-old Kian Fairest, from Howden-le-Wear.
Durham’s trio of market town-style settlements sit high on the plains of Weardale, while Tow Law is the highest settlement above sea level in England. The picturesque churches, winding streets and large amount of greenery featured heavily in the dozens of submissions, though it was young Kian who wowed judges, according to the Northern Echo.
Kian’s design has since gone to print on the front of 5,000 leaflets, which are being sent through schools and community centres in the area.
