Historic cathedral targets lovebirds with print campaign
The historic Arbroath Abbey is being re-launched as one of the best places for couples north of the border to tie the knot, with a focused leaflet campaign now highlighting the stunning location in the local area and beyond.
In 2012, Historic Scotland – the abbey’s custodians – stated that weddings would no longer be taking place at the landmark, claiming that demand was way too low. However, a period of successful lobbying from the Arbroath Abbey Action Group – which partnered with the Arbroath Herald – forced the caretakers to reinstate bonds of holy matrimony.
Angus Council has agreed to push leaflets in local libraries, access offices and other official buildings, while members of the lobby are also taking time to distribute leaflets to businesses related to wedding services across Angus.
Chairman of Arbroath Abbey Action Group Harry Ritchie said that more promotion with printed materials would be required to improve the fortunes of the famous venue, which is partially ruined since the Reformation of the 16th century.
He explained: “The group, among other things, has succeeded in persuading Historic Scotland to reinstate access to the abbey for the staging of wedding ceremonies after they announced plans to remove this facility. However, continuing access will depend upon the level of uptake. In other words, it is a case of ‘use it or lose it’.”
