A new project by Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars aims to take 3D printing to the next level with a plan to print an entire home using a D-Shape printer – a new type of 3D printer designed for large-scale buildings.

The home, named the Landscape House, is designed as a Mobius strip, a continuous loop rising out of the ground and twisting around to create a seamless structure. It will be printed in sections as hollow shells made from fused sand, and then filled with fibre-reinforced concrete for extra fortification.

The print industry has seen a lot of changes over the past few years, and all forms of print from flyers to scale models have had to be more innovative. Ruijssenaars believes that this method will cut out the manual process of construction, and allow designers more freedom in architectural concepts. He commented: “By simply pressing the ‘enter’ key on the keypad we intend to give the architect the possibility to make buildings directly, without intermediaries who can add interpretation and make mistakes in the realisation.”
